World Tourism Day 2023
World Tourism Day has been held on 27 September each year since 1980. The date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Statutes of the Organization in 1970, paving the way for the establishment of UNWTO five years later. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism.

‘Rethinking Tourism” is the theme for World Tourism Day 2023. This year’s official celebration will be hosted by Indonesia, celebrating this opportunity to rethink how we do tourism for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient sector.
WTD 2022 – Indonesia –World Tourism Day returns to focus on the future. This means putting people and planet first and bringing everyone from governments and businesses to local communities together around a shared vision for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient sector.
WTD 2021 – The COVID-19 pandemic has had a massive social and economic impact. Both developed and developing economies have been hit. The restart of tourism will help kickstart recovery and growth.
WTD 2020 –“Tourism and Rural Development” celebrates the sector’s unique ability to drive economic development and provide opportunities outside of big cities, including in those communities that would otherwise be left behind.

World Tourism Day 2023 Significance
World Tourism Day focuses on promoting tourism across the globe. The United Nations World Trade Organization (UNWTO), in 1979, initiated to observe the day on September 27. This day is proposed to increase public awareness of the role that tourism plays in the global community and to show how it influences global social, cultural, political, and economic values. The day is also observed to raise awareness of the global issues listed in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to highlight the contributions that the tourist sector can make to achieving those objectives.
