WB Sabuj Sathi Prakalpa Scheme Online Registration Process

Started in 2015, bicycles are given to students of state-run, state-sponsored, aided schools and madrasas studying between classes 9 and 12 in a bid to reduce the issue of dropping out of school, especially in rural Bengal and also to ensure they continue school education till at least class 12.

Implementation: https://wbsaboojsathi.gov.in was developed with the dedicated support team of NIC to handle all the modules and to cater to the requirements of all the stakeholders of this mammoth scheme.

Sabooj Sathi Scheme 2023: Online Application Form PDF Download – Under the CM’s flagship ‘Sabuj Sathi’ scheme which was launched in 2015-2016, 84 lakh students have been provided with bicycles to go to school. The scheme bagged the prestigious World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) award under the United Nations. The term Sabooj Sathi means students’ companions. ‘Sabooj’ stands for the green in Bengali and also implies children while ‘sathi’ means companion. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself had created the logo for the scheme which consists of a young boy running, with two spinning bicycle wheels alongside his legs.

The scheme, which was appreciated both in internal and national platforms, proved effective as the state, according to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), 2020, topped the list of states with the least school dropouts.  According to the state government, it has so far distributed cycles among 85 lakh students at an estimated cost of over Rs 2,700 crore. The school dropout rate in West Bengal villages dropped by 20-25 percent in last four years, under the ‘Sabooj Sathi’ scheme, which provides free bicycles to students from Classes IX to XII.

The distribution of bicycles among students is overseen by the Backward Class Welfare Department. The department already floated a tender for procuring 10 lakh bicycles. Sabuj Sathi had contested with 800 projects from across the globe to become the “winner” under the e-government category. A survey conducted in 2019 by the state Backward Classes Welfare Department found that the scheme has gone a long way to enhance the general mobility of the population and girls in particular.
