Summary: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the New Education Policy (NEP). One of the major decision, the Cabinet has renamed the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) as the Ministry of Education.

New system of education

The Modi government approved the new education policy 2020. In the new education policy, the format of 10 + 2 has been completely abolished. Till now the school curriculum in our country runs according to 10 + 2 but now it will be according to 5+ 3+ 3+ 4. This means that one part from the primary to the second class, then the second part from the third to the fifth, the third part from the sixth to the eighth and the last from the ninth to the 12th. Here, understand what is the system of 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 format .

What is the NEP?

NEP refers to the New Education Policy adopted by the Indian government. It was last drafted in 1986 and updated in 1992. To bring changes in the education system, the Modi-led BJP government in its election manifesto had promised to bring a new education policy or NEP.

Who created NEP?

A panel of experts led by the former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan had discussed about the issues and changes tobe bring about in the Indian education system – ranging from school to college to recruitment. These suggestions were compiled and then these were approved by Ministry.

  • We aim to achieve 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio in preschool to secondary level by 2030. Once infrastructure/participation are in place, ensuring quality #education will be the key in the retention of students, so that students do not lose interest in attending school. : Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank

  • More HEIs will use the mother tongue/local language as a medium of instruction, and/or offer programmes #bilingually. Private HEIs too will be encouraged and incentivised to use Indian languages as medium of instruction and/or offer bilingual programmes.

  • National Curricular & Pedagogical Framework for Early Childhood Care & Education (NCPFECCE) by NCERT will be divided into 2 sub-frameworks for:upto 3 year old & 3-8 year old. The framework will serve as a guide for parents & early childhood care & education institutions

  • Ensuring that quality education reaches to the students of ALL sections of the society. A special joint task force will be constituted to ensure the same.

  • With an objective to improve multiple aspects of education, the use and integration of #technology will be encouraged & supported. Efforts will be focused on emerging disruptive technologies that can help us transform the #education system & empower our educators.

  • Recognising that our teachers will require training in high-quality content & pedagogy. As colleges/universities move towards becoming multidisciplinary, they will also aim to house outstanding education departments that offer B.Ed., M.Ed., & Ph.D. degrees in #education.

  • Cash rich content will be reduced to its core essentials, and make space for critical thinking, holistic, enquiry-based, discovery-based, discussion-based, and analysis-based learning.

  • #NEP2020 Equitable and Inclusive Education: Right pointing backhand indexEmphasis will be given on Socially & Economically Disadvantaged Groups. Right pointing backhand indexSchool complexes will be supported for providing children with disabilities facilities to suit their needs, ensuring their full participation in the classroom.

  • #NEP2020 The UG degree will have multiple exit options. An Academic Bank of Credit shall be established which would digitally store the academic credits earned from various recognized HEIs so that the degrees from an HEI can be awarded taking into account credits earned.

  • #NEP2020 Teachers will be recruited through robust and transparent processes. Promotions will be merit-based, and a mechanism will be developed for multi-source periodic performance appraisals.

  • #NEP2020 In order to ensure equitable & inclusive education to all, tactical strategies will be made, and concrete steps will be taken for making quality higher education opportunities available to all individuals.

  • Targeting a 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher #education by 2035. While a number of new institutions may be developed to attain these goals, a large part of the capacity creation will be achieved by consolidating/expanding/improving existing HEIs.

  • To provide equitable & inclusive education for all, Gender-Inclusion Fund will be set up by GoI. The fund will be available to States, to support & scale effective community-based interventions that address barriers to female & transgender children’s access to education.

  • The medium of instruction (preferably) till Grade 8 & beyond, will be the home language/mother-tongue/local language/regional language. Starting from the Foundational Stage, children will be exposed to different languages with a particular emphasis on the mother tongue.

  • Ensuring universal access to high-quality Early Childhood Care and #Education across the country. #ECCE will focus on developing social capacities, sensitivity, good behaviour, courtesy, ethics, personal & public cleanliness, teamwork & cooperation among children.

  3. Looks to be a great initiative to solve many short comings in the present education system. There are several issues being raised by several sections of society, but I feel they are to be addressed in the implementing stages. The policy as such seems fine.

  4. Excellent, hope we will implement it, in all true sprite & practical sense, above any narrow lanes of politics. Problems will come, deficiencies will be observed, initial failures & problems may be there but we all will move forwards with positivity.

  5. Implementation needs to reflect the true Spirit of the Policy in words and letters. Global Vision of the policy must not be undermined. A lot of expectations of the policy for all categories of Students.
