International Women’s Day: History

International Women’s Day: History

The earliest Women’s Day observance, called “National Woman’s Day,” was held on February 28, 1909, in New York City, organized by the Socialist Party of America[10] at the suggestion of activist Theresa Malkiel. Though there have been claims that the day was commemorating a protest by women garment workers in New York on March 8, 1857, researchers have described this as a myth.

The idea to make it international came from Clara Zetkin, who suggested the idea at an International Conference for Working Woman in Copenhagen in 1910. It was comprised of 100 women from 17 countries. It was first celebrated in 1911 in Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, and Austria.

About International Women’s Day : Significance and Importance

International Women’s Day is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.
