In order to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process, Government of India has decided to celebrate January 25 every year as “National Voters’ Day” (Hindi: राष्ट्रीय मतदाता दिवस). It has been started from January 26, 2011 to mark Commission’s foundation day. National Voters Day History

The Election Commission of India was founded on 25 January in the year 1950. In the year 2011, a Union Cabinet meeting was held which was chaired by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In this meeting, a Law Ministry proposal was approved regarding National Voters Day – hence, the first time this day was observed was in the year 2011.

National Voters Day is celebrated every year with a particular theme. It not only encourages the youth to participate in the electoral process but also focuses that the Right to vote is the basic right. This is the 10th National Voters Day.
